What's it about? All I know is that there are death gods in it that are these monster-like things.

Well...
Light Yagami is a genius, but bored, high school student who resents that the whole world is in a rotten mess, infested with crime and corruption. His life undergoes an enormous change when he discovers a mysterious notebook with the titled "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. Light was initially skeptical of the Death Note's genuinity, believing it was just a prank. However, his successful murder of Kurou Otoharada and Shibuimaru Takuo, he is forced to admit the Death Note is real. He then seeks to become the 'God of new world' by eradicating criminals whom he deems as deserving of death.
Soon, the many unexplainable deaths of reported criminals are noticed, and catches the attention of the International Police Organisation and a mysterious detective codenamed as "L". L quickly locates the serial murderer, that the publics dubs as "Kira", in Japan, and acquires the knowledge that Kira can kill just by knowing the victim's face and name. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and from then, begins a series of mind games in which both sides seek to nail down each other.

Sounds interesting. Oh, and if there are spoilers, please make the colour of the text, the colour of the background. The colour can be found in the rules thread, but there doesn't seem to be any spoilers in that.

Lmfao, obviously missed it looking through the pages.
No no no! When I started watching it [or went to watch it] I thought it was some Yaoi thing my cousin was trying to get me into. [She's like that] and when I watched it I was fricking astounded. The plot makes me dribble everywhere.
And yes, he's selfish but that's what makes it great. L's and Light's immaturity makes it all work. Both equally intellectual. It just.. works.
There's a lot of twists and turns in it, and everything is just.. mn. Lol.
OH. AND THERE'S A LIVE ACTION FILM. It's yet to be subbed in English but once it is I'll let you all know.
I'm not going to let anything loose, although I was to scream at you all what happens.. I shall refrain.
Bad guy? PFT. He's doing nothing the government wouldn't do in it's sweet merry time. Okay, so he kills a few suspects rather than convicts so he has a psychotic flare. But he's still trying to do things in the best in a very school boy error kind of way.
O.o; Ramble over. Sorry about the thread thing again!

Wows ... I watched the first three episodes last night. Mainly since episode 19 of Trigun on YouTube was dubbed and I refused to watch it, so I'm not carrying on with Trigun until I get the DVDs. Death Note, though. Woah. I watched the first three episodes and only in those few, I was pretty engrossed. Light, or Kira as he's become to be known by, is a friggin' awesome character. He doesn't seem so "goody-goody" like you get in a lot of anime. Then again, he isn't evil, but that book is going to his head. In a way, he reminds me of myself. If I got a Death Note, I'd do exactly the same thing he does. Really.

Nuuuuuh, his name is Raito. u___u! Like my 'net name, r-a-i-ne. .__.;;
I read Death Note a loooong time ago, about a year and a half ago when it was translated by random people on the 'net. Raito ish awesome and it helps that he's pretty spiffeh <3. I think he has a god complex because he believes it's okay to kill criminals. x]

And isn't Raito translated "Light"? I mean, all of the fansubs I watched called him that.

I believe in karma. What goes around comes around. Yes, Raito is translated to Light. But how did people get to calling him Kira? ? Did I miss something? Because I did stop reading the manga after 10 volumes; I felt like the author was pushing it by introducing a new character. I won't say anymore because then I'd spoil it.

I'm not sure how it happened, but I always knew Kira was Light.
