It's coming up. I don't like the night, really. Just lots of noise. Sure, the fireworks are pretty to look at long enough, but they got boring. Especially if you're watching them alone like I do out of my window. -_- Anyone doing anything special like buying fireworks or anything?

I always find Fireworks boring. It's just lights in the sky. They'd be more interesting if I didn't see them every year.

Fireworks are boring. And unnecessarily loud. And people always insist on letting them off just as I'm almost asleep

I can't completely remember what it is we celebrate. Basically, Guy Fawkes and some other dudes (catholics, me thinks) tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They got caught, though. I have no idea why we celebrate such a thing, but we do. Well, not me, fireworks are just annoying, but yeah ...

After the reign of Queen Elizabeth the Catholics believed their new leader, King James I, would be more tolerant of the religion because his mother was Catholic [James's mother was Mary Queen of Scots, Elizabeth's cousin]. Alas, he was not. 13 men decided that they would take a route of violence to sort this thing once and for all! They decided on the houses of parliment because not only could they kill the king they could also kill the Prince of Wales and members of parliment who were making the Catholics lifes very difficult indeed. To carry out their plan they got 36 barrels of gunpowder and placed it in the celler directly beneath the house of Lords. Some of the 13 men started having second thoughts when they realised friends would be in the Houses of Parliment and also people fighting for the Catholics and their religion. One of them even sent a letter to his friend warning him to stay away on november the 5th. This letter reached the King.
Guy Fawkes was the only conspirator in the celler with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when 'all the kings men' barged in. He was arrested , tortured and eventually executed.
Bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the king. Hence bonfire night.
Taadaaa. Emma with her knowledge once again.

I'm glad someone understands the traditions of our country. It annoys me when people aren't able to explain this sort of thing. I mean, c'mon, has no one seen V for Vendetta? At the beginning, the film makers actually included a voice over explaining Guy Fawkes's Night, purely for the American audiences. It scares me that some English audiences require that explanation too.
Anyway, I did used to go with my family or friends to the bonfire/fireworks display on our town common (our town always has a really good one) but for the past few years I haven't bothered to go because it's too cold and I have a perfect view from my bedroom window anyway (I can see across most of the town). I love fireworks. They're so awesome. And the blue ones are the best, because they're the rarest and prettiest.

Agreed! That being said, I don't dislike history, I just never picked it and I haven't done history for years. The subject of Guy Fawkes I covered in Year 8 and that was ages ago. Can't really blame me for forgetting.

I love History.
Especially Henry the VIII and Elizabeth I. I like a bit of scandle. ;]
I'm with you Shnophie! Since I live in a very historic town.
Shit, I had a saint die on a hill down the road from me!

Henry VIII was a fat bastard, but his daddy was a wicked king.

V for Vendetta is a brilliant film, seriously, I'm obsessing over it lately... I've been trying to get hold of the mask from ebay, but i'll have to kick the bucket and go to forbiddenplanet.com for it...
that film taught me a lot about Guy Fawkes night that I didn't know before, but I didn't really need the voiceover, nonetheless...
