This is an exerpt from the story/novel that I've been working on for the past 2 years (on and off), titled A Dawning Amidst Darkness. I tried to capture the specific scene that kind of explains the gist of the story...I haven't worked on it in so long.. I need to get inspired again.

Several weeks passed by with Fiona never knowing how Vivian really felt. Ever since Fiona had moved out to pursue her college career, Vivian had made a habit of keeping her feelings buried deep inside of her heart. She pretended as if everything was okay, and somewhere along the line, Fiona had forgotten to notice the hurt in her sister’s eyes.
With her bags packed and most of her furniture already shipped overseas, Fiona’s small apartment appeared significantly more spacious than before. She glanced around, reme.mbering all the great memories that she would hold deep in her heart. The freedom of living on her own for the first time in her life. Meeting her first real best friend. Moving in with her first roommate. She felt like she had experienced a lifetime in this very apartment.
Fiona was jerked out of her daydream by the ringing of her doorbell. She scurried quickly to the door and snuck a look through the peephole to see who it was, even though she already knew it was Dom arriving to drive her to the airport. She swiftly turned the large silver knob and opened the door wide enough for Dom to walk through.
“Dom!” Fiona cried, suddenly becoming emotional.
“Hey, babe,” Dom replied, noticing the moistness of her eyes, “why are you crying?”
“I am just going to miss you so much! I don’t know what I am going to do without you.”
“Awww, you’ll be fine, Fi. You’ll be so busy over there that you won’t even have time to think about me.”
She smiled half-heartedly, although she clearly heard the crack in his voice. “Trust me, it’s not possible to be too busy to think of you.”
Dominique wrapped his arms around her in a protective hug and the two of them just stood that way for awhile before parting. Fiona clutched the handle on her bags tightly and quietly followed Dominique to the doorway. She took one last glimpse over her shoulder, sighed, and was gone from the room.
On the way to the airport in Dom’s Volkswagon Bug, the two sat in silence. Fiona stared out the window at everything she was leaving behind. She was starting to have doubts if going to college so far away was really the right thing for her to do right now. She knew her little sister was going through high school and needed her very much. She reme.mbered how much she herself had needed an older sister to help her through the often-terrifying times of her high school years. But Fiona felt like she had to do what was best for herself. She had always thought of her family before herself for her entire life. For once, she wanted to do something for her own benefit without worrying about how it would affect her friends and family’s lives, no matter how selfish that sounded.
“Dom?” Fiona broke the silence.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think I’m doing the right thing by accepting this scholarship?”
“Of course you are,” Dom replied, the cracking in his voice obvious to Fiona’s ears.
“I’m not too sure. I mean, I feel like I’m really hurting Vivian’s feelings by moving so far away when she needs me the most. I’m starting to worry about her.”
“Fi, don’t worry, I will be here to make sure that she survives without you, okay?” Dom answered, as he reached across the seat to take her hand in his own.
She glanced at the handsome features of his face, the soft blue eyes with a tiny sliver of his soft brown hair dangling in front of them.
“I know you will,” she said, gently leaning her head on his shoulder.

After Fiona had checked her bags in with her airline provider, she and Dom pushed through the throng of people to the waiting area for her plane. As they neared the vicinity, hand-in-hand, Fiona noticed that her mother, Vivian, and Roxanne were already waiting for her.
“Hey, what are they doing here? I thought they couldn’t make it to see me off?” Fiona exclaimed, a confused expression absorbing her face.
“Well, it was supposed to be a …” Dom was cut off by the voices of Fiona’s visitors.
“Surprise!”
A single tear dripped down Fiona’s cheek, only to be wiped away hasti.ly by her hand.
“What’s wrong, honey?” Lillian asked, as she rushed up to give her oldest daughter a hug.
“I’m just going to miss all of you so much!” Fiona cried, as Roxanne wrapped her arms around her best friend in an affectionate embrace.
“Don’t worry, Fi, we’ll always be with you right here,” Roxy assured her, while placing her hand over her heart.
“Awww, thanks, Roxy,” she said, wiping another tear from her eyes.
“NOW BOARDING FLIGHT 710 TO THE UNITED KINGDOM. ALL PASSENGERS PLEASE START MAKING YOUR WAY INTO THE TERMINAL IMMEDIATELY.”
Fiona eyed the man speaking into the microphone. “Well, that’s me,” she said, trying to sound excited. She noticed that Vivian had been constantly gazing at her feet the whole time, not saying a word. She grasped Vivian’s arm, dragging her aside.
“I’m sorry, Viv,” she began, “I know how much you need me right now, but I have to do this for myself. Besides, you can still call me whenever you need to talk. I know it’s not the same as being here in person, but we can make it work.”
Vivian was quiet for a moment. Then she raised her head, face-to-face with Fiona. Her eyes were blotchy, what little makeup she had worn smeared to the point of non-existence. “Just go,” Vivian said tentatively. Hidden behind the pain in her eyes, a tiny sliver of fierceness shone through, informing Fiona of the future relationship she had unintentionally created. She felt something inside her heart break, as swiftly as if an arrow had pierced straight through it. She fought to hold back the tears that threatened to plunge from behind her eyelids.
Fiona hesitantly turned back to her mother, Roxanne and Dominique, who had all witnessed the exchange of emotions between the two sisters.
“I love you all dearly and I promise I will keep in touch,” Fiona began, “you all know this is definitely not good-bye, so until the next time we see each other, don’t forget to call or write.” She then picked up her bags from the hard concrete floor and gave each of them a hug and a kiss before making her way to the terminal.

Vivian stood at the window watching as the plane sped off down the runway, stealing her sister away from her life once more. She knew things would never be the same between her and Fiona. They would never be as close as they once were. Fiona had let their sisterly bond diminish into nothing. She felt a hand grasp her shoulder and, turning abruptly, was startled to see Dom standing right behind her.
“Oh, hey,” she said nervously, not wanting him to know how his very presence affected her emotions.
“Hey,” he stated simply. “You know that Fiona never meant to hurt you with any of this, right?”
“Yes,” she replied coldly, her warm expression turning to ice at the mention of her sister.
“Then why are you being so hard on her?”
“I am not the one to be blamed, Dominique. She’s the one that left.” She was trying her best to appear calm, yet at the same time fearless, unable to give in to her feelings of sorrow and misery. But she failed to hide the pain in her eyes and before she knew it, she was sobbing like a little girl. He took her in his arms and let her cry on his broad shoulder.
“I was mad at you at first,” Vivian admitted, “because you were the one that sent in her painting and gave them the chance to notice her work. But now I realize that she had a choice of accepting the scholarship or not.”
“Viv, I have to admit, a very small part of me wanted her to decide not to go because I wanted to keep her closer to me, but then I came to my senses and realized how selfish I was being. This really is a good opportunity for her.”
“I don’t know, Dom. Who am I going to talk to when things get rough? You don’t know how hard it is in high school these days. I need an older sister to confide in.”
“Viv, I will be here if you need to talk. I told Fi I would look after you to make sure you are okay while she’s gone and that’s exactly what I plan on doing.”
At that moment, Vivian glanced up at those beautiful baby blue eyes and felt something that she was not supposed to be feeling. An emotion that had been forbidden to her since the moment she laid eyes on Dominique six years ago when her sister had brought him home and announced him as her boyfriend. For a brief moment, a flicker of desire flashed across his face, then was gone as quickly as it had appeared. Dominique had never realized how stunningly attractive his girlfriend’s little sister had grown up to be until he gazed into those exquisite eyes of hers. It didn’t trigger in his mind until it was too late that she was in fact, Fiona’s little sister.
Before either of them knew what they were doing, Dom had grasped Vivian’s face in his hands, alarming her even more than before. His rough, but smooth, lips met her silky-soft ones in a blazing kiss that left her face glowing with passion. They stood there, staring at each other, neither of them knowing quite what to say.
“Well,” Vivian began slowly, “I better be going. My mom’s waiting for me. Thanks for everything, Dom.”
She turned on her heel, without even a glance back. She couldn’t stare at his face any longer without thinking of how good a kisser he was. She started to realize what had just happened and, before reaching her mother’s side, her body lurched forward, as if she were going to throw up right in the hallway. She darted for the nearest restroom, shouting to her mother and Roxanne to wait for her in the car.
