Now that we're "between series", now, I thought some discussion of a different sort might be in order.
I was wondering if anyone here might have listened to any of the Big Finish audio productions. I've listened to quite a few, each from the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Doctors, and they are all really good.
The first Big Finish production I listened to was the Eighth Doctor story The Chimes of Midnight. This was a rather creepy story, and the plot elements concerning Charlie had me more than a bit confused. But it's a great story nonetheless.
One of my favorites would have to be the pirate story, with the Sixth Doctor, as the second half of that was all a musical, and all the songs were parodies of Rodgers and Hammerstein numbers.
Another favorite would have to be Jubilee, also featuring the Sixth Doctor. This story would go on to be adapted into the New Who episode Dalek, with only a few connecting story elements still intact (the titular Dalek being the last of its kind in the universe, for instance). But Jubilee tells a very dark tale of the similarities between humanity and Daleks. Worth a listen.
Then there's the Fifth Doctor story Spare Parts, which was the inspiration for the Tenth Doctor story Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel. Just as Jubilee is markedly different than Dalek, Spare Parts is noticeably different than its television adaptation. The main connecting thread between the two is how they deal with the creation of Cybermen. Spare Parts takes place on Mondas, and relates how our universe Cybermen came to be, whereas the Tenth Doctor story tells of the alternate-reality Cybusmen.
